Lockjaw is a condition in which you are unable to open the mouth completely as it pains when you do. It may be associated with clicking sounds, pain, and headaches. It is a common medical and dental condition and can be cured with a few home remedies.

Boil 2 garlic cloves in a teaspoon of mustard oil and let it cool. Apply the oil thrice or twice a day on the area which is affected.

Apply Cold and Warm Packs One after Another

This tip will help reduce swelling and pain of lockjaw. To apply heat, use a soaked towel or hot water bag. To cool it down, apply ice pack by covering it with a towel to protect your face. Don’t freeze or burn your skin. Use them alternatively in every 10 to 15 minutes and switch. Be sure to cover the whole area with a towel or cloth.

Wort Oil

It has a lot of xanthones and flavonoids as well as anti-depressant properties. The oil soothes pain and improves the process of healing in your jaw’s injured muscles. Rub this oil on the affected area and around the area below your ear.

So, you need to eat foods that are loaded with magnesium to relax your jaw muscles and reduce inflammation and stress that causes lockjaw. This way, you may consume flaxseed, almonds, Brazil nuts, avocados, yogurt, oatmeal, watermelon seeds, corn, pumpkin, spinach, peanuts, sesame seeds, bananas, cashews, apple, raisins, cucumber, soybean, bell pepper, celery, papaya, broccoli and wheat. Adult females need 320 mg of magnesium daily while adult males require 420 mg. You can also fulfill your daily magnesium requirement by drinking plenty of water as it is the rich source of magnesium.

Drink Lots of Water

Dehydration also affects bones and muscle cramps. So, you should stay well hydrated. By drinking plenty of water, you can easily resolve lockjaw. You can keep your bones and muscles in the best condition by drinking around 8 glasses daily.

Have Enough Calcium

Calcium is helpful to improve bone density. Lack of calcium leads to muscle spasms. So, you should have food rich in calcium as it is helpful to strength jaw bones and regulate the movements of jaw muscles.  This way, you may consume cheese, yogurt, milk, oranges, almonds, kale, sesame seeds, dried figs, black eyed peas, sardines, canned salmon and broccoli. Some other sources are yogurt, milk, margarine, orange juice, and some ready-to-eat cereals. On average, you need 600 UI of vitamin D every day.

The above tips are helpful to deal with lockjaw but don’t forget to take doctor’s recommendations seriously. You have no need to take large bits if you cannot open your mouth wide. Avoid chewing large bites as it can strain your jaw muscles. Better to eat small bites. Exercises also play an important role in treating your lockjaw.
