Ask your doctor for help if you are trying hard to lose weight. To improve the chances of losing weight, you can drink plenty of water, maintain a food diary, do more exercise and eat more vegetables and fruits.

Quit Smoking

Smoking increases the chances of several health problems and kidney problems. If you smoke, quit this habit as soon as possible to reduce the chances of developing this disease. Ask your doctor about smoking cessation programs or medications to quit smoking.

Control Your Alcohol Intake

Having a few alcoholic drinks few days in a week is okay. But drinking alcohol every day can cause kidney damage. Ask your doctor if you have trouble reducing alcohol intake or you are heavily addicted to alcoholic beverages.

Increase Your Physical Activity

Doing more exercise can benefit your overall well-being and it may also be helpful to optimize kidney function. So, you should ensure getting some exercise on daily basis. You can see improvement in your health with just 30 minutes of walk. If it is difficult to take 30 minutes for walking, you may break your exercise sessions over the day. For instance, you may walk for 15 minutes after having lunch and 15 minutes after having dinner. Even better, you may go for a quick walk every morning for 10 minutes and then 10 minutes on the afternoon and 10 minutes at night.

Water is important to prevent kidney stones and promote good health. If you are worried about kidney issues, drink plenty of water. Try to drink around 6 to 8 glasses of water daily and make it your goal. If you have kidney stones, drink more water daily. If your physician prescribes a specific liquid for you, stick to it.

Eat Protein in Moderate Amount

Heavy protein diets may overload your kidneys. So, you should eat just a moderate amount in order to keep them healthy. Protein should contain around 20% to 30% of calories. For instance, if you consume 2000 Kcal daily, it should be around 400 to 600 Kcal from protein. Keep track of your eating habits and pay proper care of your calorie intake from high protein meals like eggs, meat, dairy, and fish.

Control Your Sodium Consumption

Sodium can also cause kidney problems. So, it is ideal to avoid foods that contain a high amount of sodium and you should reduce sodium intake as much as you can. It is better to cook food on your own by reducing the amount of processed and prepared food. If you use any processed or prepared food, be sure to read a label and avoid meals that have added salt. Also, keep track of the amount of sodium you eat daily. Keep it below 2300 mg daily if you are below 51 and below 1500 mg every day if you are above 51.

Go for Low-Fat Foods

Low-fat foods are helpful to protect your heart, arteries and kidneys as well. So, you should avoid high-fat foods like baked items, fried foods, and other heavy dishes. Choose low-fat alternatives like low-fat cheese, low-fat milk, lean meat, fruits, and poultry without skin, beans, and vegetables.

Control Phosphorous, if Recommended by Doctor

If your kidney disease is in an advanced stage, you have to control your phosphorus intake, if it is recommended by the doctor. This way, you have to avoid foods like cola, dairy products, deli meats, processed foods, and meats that have added phosphorous.

Control Potassium Intake, if Advised

You also have to keep the balance of potassium intake. This way, you have to limit or avoid some foods if you have been instructed to go on a low potassium diet. This way, you have to avoid foods like oranges, salt substitutes, bananas, tomatoes, potatoes, bran cereals, wild rice and brown rice, beans, nuts and whole wheat pasta, and bread.

Herbs are capable of improving the health of several organs of the body. Don’t use herbs if you are having any kidney problem. If you wish to use herbs to enhance kidney health, be sure to ask your doctor first. Several herbs have a specific amount of electrolytes like magnesium, potassium, sodium and phosphorous that can make it worse if you are reported with poor kidney function. Some herbs may also come into contact with other medications.

Drink Some Teas that Support Kidney Function

If your physician gave a clean bill of health about your kidneys, you may consider drinking some healthy teas to support your kidney. To make your own herbal tea cup, use a teaspoon of dried herbs or tea bag with boiled water. Add the water over the herbs and let it sheer for 5 to 10 minutes. Drink 2-3 cups of herbal tea daily. Some of the herbs that are good for a kidney are corn silk, dandelion leaf, parsley leaf, bearberry, and marshmallow.

Stop taking Herbs if You Have Any Adverse Side Effect

Herbal teas are also vulnerable to cause adverse side effects in the body of some people, even though they are mild. If you find that your body is reacting to the herbs you are going to use in teas, stop using them and ask your doctor.

Also, ask your doctor if you are going to stop using any herb. Always inform your doctor about any alternative or natural medications you are taking.
